Why Do Teeth Get Discoloured? Let's Explore Together

As we age, our teeth often become darker due to natural changes in the tooth’s mineral structure. This can happen from everyday habits like tea, coffee, and red wine, or sometimes from things outside our control—like antibiotics, dental trauma, orthodontic treatment, or root canal therapy. Whatever the cause, we’re here to help.

Here’s a practical tip: the whites of your eyes should match the white shade of your teeth and this is a good guide for what suits you. Over-whitened teeth can look unnatural, and we’re all about helping you achieve a smile that feels authentically you.

If you’ve found yourself hiding your smile in photos, avoiding social situations, or feeling self-conscious at work because of tooth discolouration—you’re not alone, and you deserve support. With compassionate, personalised care, we can explore tooth whitening options that help you feel confident and comfortable in your own skin. Let’s chat about what might work best for your unique needs.

What to Expect at the Practice

Before, during and after – here is exactly how your visit runs, so nothing on the day comes as a surprise.

Overview

We recommend take-home bleaching which can be done at your own pace, which normally takes up to several weeks to see results. This is less invasive on your teeth than in-chair whitening. Slow and steady wins the race and is safer for your teeth. Simone Alexander, our hygienist, specialises in tooth whitening. Unlike over-the-counter products, professional whitening is tailored to your individual needs and carried out under the supervision of Simone to ensure it is both safe and effective.

Before Treatment

Both Simone and Dr Mary-Anne Slater will take time to thoroughly examine your teeth and gums, and we’ll have a genuine conversation about what you’re hoping to achieve with whitening. We understand that dental visits can feel overwhelming, so we’ll walk through everything with curiosity and care.

If we spot any existing issues—like tooth decay or gum disease—we’ll be honest about addressing those first. It’s the fairest approach, and it actually helps us deliver the best possible results for you. We may also recommend a professional clean, which works beautifully alongside whitening to give you that brighter smile you deserve.

You’ll have our full focus and personalised support throughout the process, because we believe everyone deserves compassionate, quality care.

During Treatment

We’ll create custom whitening trays tailored specifically to your teeth—because one size definitely doesn’t fit all. This starts with taking impressions of your upper and lower teeth, so we can craft trays that fit just right.

Along with your personalised trays, you’ll receive professional-grade whitening gel and clear, practical instructions for safe at-home use. We know life’s busy, so we’ve designed this to work around your schedule while keeping sensitivity to a minimum. The gradual whitening process means you’ll see results at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

We’ll schedule follow-up appointments to check in on your progress and make sure you’re achieving the brighter smile you’re after. Think of us as your partner in this journey—we’re here to support you every step of the way and ensure you get the results you deserve.

After Treatment

Most patients notice their smile looking noticeably brighter within a few weeks—and that’s a wonderful feeling! Some temporary tooth sensitivity might pop up, but it typically settles down quickly. Simone understands how annoying sensitivity can be, so she’ll send you home with tooth-sensitive toothpaste and practical tips to keep any discomfort minimal.

To keep those brilliant results shining, a few simple habits help:

  • Stick with your regular oral hygiene routine—we’re here to support you with honest guidance on what actually works
  • Go easy on the staining culprits like tea and smoking when you can
  • Think of periodic top-up whitening as a little refresh to keep your smile looking its best

Simone’s here to make this whole process as straightforward and stress-free as possible, so don’t hesitate to ask questions along the way. Everyone deserves a smile that makes them feel confident.

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions Wagga families ask us most about this service.

Is tooth whitening safe?

Yes, professional tooth whitening is safe when done by a dental professional who understands your unique needs. At our Wagga dental practice, we take a personalised approach to whitening—starting with a thorough assessment of your teeth and gums to make sure you’re a good candidate. We use evidence-based whitening systems and monitor your progress carefully, which is quite different from over-the-counter products that lack professional oversight.

The key to safety is having a dental professional who listens to your concerns and customises the treatment to suit you. If you’re nervous about dental procedures, we’re here to make the experience less stressful and more accessible.

Will whitening damage my teeth?

Professional whitening won’t damage healthy teeth—in fact, it’s gentler and more controlled than many at-home products. The whitening agents we use are carefully formulated and applied by someone who knows exactly what they’re doing. We protect your gums and other sensitive areas, and we monitor how your teeth respond throughout the process.

That said, if your teeth already have weakened enamel or existing damage, we’ll chat about this honestly with you first. We’re committed to fairness and transparency, so you’ll know exactly what to expect before we start.

How white will my teeth become?

How white your teeth become depends on where you’re starting from and the natural shade of your teeth. Most people see a noticeable improvement—typically several shades lighter—but the results vary. Some teeth respond beautifully to whitening, while others have a natural limit to how light they can go. That’s just biology, and we’ll be honest about what’s realistic for you.

During your consultation, we can show you shade guides and discuss what results you’re hoping for. This helps us set fair expectations and choose the right whitening approach for your goals.

Does whitening work on crowns, veneers or fillings?

Here’s the honest truth: whitening doesn’t work on crowns, veneers, or fillings. These restorations are made from materials that don’t respond to whitening agents the way natural tooth enamel does. If you have these in your smile and want a more uniform result, we’ll discuss your options—which might include replacing them to match newly whitened teeth, or whitening only your natural teeth.

This is exactly the kind of thing we love to talk through with curiosity and creativity. We’ll help you explore the solution that works best for your smile and your situation.

How long do whitening results last?

Professional whitening results typically last between 6 months to 2 years, depending on your habits and lifestyle. If you’re a coffee drinker, red wine enthusiast, or smoker, results may fade faster. The good news? Touch-up treatments are quick and affordable, so maintaining your brighter smile is straightforward.

We’ll give you practical tips for looking after your whitened teeth and let you know when a refresh might be worthwhile. Think of it as part of your ongoing oral health journey with us.

Will my teeth become sensitive?

Some people do experience temporary tooth sensitivity during or after whitening—it’s one of the most common questions we get asked, and we’re glad you’re thinking about it. The sensitivity is usually mild and passes within a few days, but we take it seriously. Before we start, we’ll assess your baseline sensitivity and may recommend a sensitivity-reducing treatment if needed.

If you do experience sensitivity, we have practical strategies to help. We’re here to make sure your whitening experience is comfortable and supportive.
